Parliamentary Question: EU Space Commissioner Comments on UFOs and UAPs
Brussels (Belgium) – A current parliamentary question by an EU Member of Parliament reveals the European Commission’s latest position on unidentified flying objects and anomalous phenomena (UFOs/UAPs).

Parliamentary Question
In his question for written answer (E-002983/2026) with reference to Article 144 of the Rules of Procedure, German FDP Member of the European Parliament and Secretary-General of the FDP North Rhine-Westphalia, Moritz Körner, submitted the inquiry on 15 July 2026.
Under the title “UAP allegations” Körner writes:

“In a June 2023 NewsNation interview, then US Senator Marco Rubio said that several current or former government personnel had approached the US Senate Intelligence Committee with what he called ‘firsthand knowledge or firsthand claims’ concerning matters related to unidentified anomalous phenomena (UAP). He added that many had held high-level security clearances and senior government positions. The current US Government has been regularly releasing tranches of documents on this issue.
1.Has the Commission verified the documents and the statements of its US counterparts on this issue?
2.Does the Commission consider the publications of the US administration to be at all serious?
3.Does the Commission rule out the existence of UAP/UFOs?”
EU Commissioner for Defence and Space responds
Moritz Körner’s questions were then answered on 25 August 2026 by the EU Commissioner for Defence and Space, the Lithuanian politician Andrius Kubilius, “on behalf of the European Commission” as follows:

„The area of unidentified anomalous phenomenon ( UAP) is considered a competence of the Member States, allowing them to address these phenomena according to the national security needs.
For example, France has established the Unidentified Aerospace Phenomena Research and Information Group (GEIPAN). Therefore, the Commission is not in a position to verify any document or make any consideration regarding publications on this topic.
The Commission and the High Representative for Foreign Affairs and Security Policy/Vice-President remain dedicated to collaborating with stakeholders to ensure the safety and security of the space environment.“

In a conversation with GreWi editor Andreas Müller, MEP Körner explains the background of his parliamentary question:
GreWi: Mr. Körner, how did you come to submit your inquiry on this subject, which is still significantly less prominent in EU politics (compared with the USA)?
Körner: The main reason for my inquiry was the significantly more intense political and public debate on this issue in the United States. I was interested in how the European Commission views the issue and to what extent there are already assessments of it at the European level.
GreWi: How is the answer by the EU Commissioner for Defence and Space to be understood?
Körner: The Commission’s response makes it clear that it does not consider itself responsible for this issue.
UFO Research in Europe
In addition to the state-run “Groupe d’études et d’informations sur les phénomènes aérospatiaux non identifiés” (GEIPAN) mentioned by Kubilius, which has been investigating UFO sightings in France for the French space agency CNES since 1977, there are numerous civilian citizen-science research organizations in the EU Member States dedicated to the investigation and research of UFOs/UAPs.
For example, in Germany, UFO sightings by the public can be reported to the “Gesellschaft zur Erforschung des UFO-Phänomens” (GEP).
In addition, the University of Würzburg is home to the “Interdisciplinary Research Center for Extraterrestrial Studies” (IFEX), one of the few academic research centers in Europe and worldwide where, in addition to space technologies, UFOs and UAPs are officially researched as part of a university’s research portfolio.
In addition, the British Ministry of Defence has published the files of its former UFO office through the country’s National Archives. Government UFO investigations and releases of files have also taken place, and continue to take place, in Belgium, Germany, Denmark, Finland, Greece, Ireland, Italy, the Netherlands, Norway, Spain, Sweden, Switzerland and Ukraine.
